Office furniture is a significant investment, and will only pay off if it is taken care of. That’s why it’s important to ensure that every employee around the office takes certain measures to protect the furniture that he or she uses and keep it looking new. Read on for an overview of proper office furniture care:

Avoid HVAC Vents

Wood furniture is fragile by nature and highly susceptible to changes in moisture. If your wood furniture sits near an HVAC vent, the constant stream of air is probably slowly drying the wood from the outside in. Dried wood is fragile, brittle, and cracks easily. You can reduce the chances of this happening by designating an area around every vent as a “no-wood zone.”

Use Coasters for Drinks

Regardless, of temperature, any beverage that you like to have at your desk must sit on a coaster. Hot drinks can eat away varnish and other finishes, while cold drinks “sweat,” which could leave permanent marks. Coaster manufacturers produce some very eclectic designs, so feel free to pick one that suits your design tastes best.

Use Protective Pads for Writing

Wood surfaces are very soft, and highly susceptible to damage from writing imprints. If you typically write with nothing between your wood desk and the paper, you may have left imprints of everything you’ve ever written on it. This is highly unsightly, as it contributes a rough, weatherworn appearance to the wood. Vinyl, plastic, or hardwood writing surfaces protect the vulnerable surface of your desk from writing wear, and best of all, they can usually be found for $20 or less.
